The Almond tree which is native to the Middle East has been cultivated for thousands of years and now grows in Mediterranean countries and in California. Almonds were prised by the Greeks who introduced them to the southern parts of Europe. Sweet Almond oil is probably one of the most popular carrier oils and contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, and E. Therapeutically it is an excellent emollient and nourishes the skin. It helps soothe inflammation and is beneficial to itching caused by dry skin including eczema and psoriasis.

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) - Organic

Bergamot is a small citrus tree which takes its name from Bergamo, a small town in Northern Italy, where it was originally grown. The citrus fruits are like small oranges which have been used for hundreds of years in Italian folk medicine. Bergamot essential oil has a fresh, sweet and fruity aroma. As well as being a classic ingredient in eau-de-cologne, it is also used in Earl Grey tea. Both could be described as uplifting and refreshing. Bergamot essential oil contains substances called bergaptens which are phototoxic i.e. they react on the skin when exposed to sunlight and make it more likely to burn. Borage (Borago officinalis) - Organic

Borage, also known as Star Flower is a helb which originates in the Middle East. As a herbal remedy it is used to revive the adrenal glands after cortisone or steroid medication. As a carrier oil, borage has been found to be a rich source of gamma linolenic acid (GLA) an essential fatty acid. It has levels of about 16%-23% compared to evening primrose oil which contains about 9%.
Being non-irritant borage oil is an excellent ingredient for dry, sensitive skin (including eczema and psoriasis). The high GLA content also helps re-establish and maintain normal skin function. It is, therefore, also recommended for mature skin.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) - Organic macerated oil.

Historically, herbalists have recognised calendula, also known as Pot Marigold or Marybud, as a healer for wounds, bruises and cuts etc. It is obtained by maceration i.e. the blossoms are steeped in a vegetable oil that has been stabilised against rancidity. Calendula carrier oil has an astringent action on the skin and is useful for dry, cracked and chapped skin conditions. It is widely used as an emollient and hydrating agent.

Carrots Carrot (Daucus carota) - Organic macerated oil.

Daucus is the Latin name for carrot. In herbal/folklore tradition carrot juice was a remedy for flatulence and acidity. This oil is produced by maceration. The carrot is chopped into small pieces and left in a vegetable oil for about three weeks. It is then filtered to produce a fine, clear orange coloured oil. Internally true carrot oil is a rich source of beta-carotene and contains vitamins A, B, C, D, E and F. In skin care products this carrier oil helps heal the skin by aiding the formation of scar tissue. It soothes itchy skin and is useful for dry/sensitive skin as well as mature skin.

Chamomile, German (Matricaria chamomilla, M recutita) - Organic

German chamomile also known as Blue Chamomile has a long standing medicinal and herbal tradition. In Europe it was used to treat such conditions as tension, digestive disorders and headaches. The plant is native to Europe and is cultivated in Eastern Europe. It is no longer grown in Germany. German Chamomile, when distilled produces chamazulene which gives the essential oil its excellent anti-inflammatory property and its deep blue colour. It is soothing and calming and is invaluable in treating inflammatory conditions, including acne, boils, dry and sensitive skin, eczema and rashes etc.

coconut Coconut (Cocos nucifera) - Natural

The origin of the coconut palm tree is unknown but it is believed that it travelled from the Indian Ocean to Malaysia and is now cultivated in many tropical areas including Africa and South East Asia.
Coco is Portuguese for goblin, the three little 'eyes' on the base of the shell reminding Portuguese explorers of a goblin's face. Traditionally, coconut oil is used to make soaps and in Ayurvedic Medicine it is used to treat burns, hair loss, kidney stones, heart and circulatory problems. The Coco plant milk is considered reconstructive, protective and conditioning and is especially suitable for dry and sensitive skin.

Cypress, Blue (Callitris intratropica) - Wild

The Australian Blue Cypress grows in the Darwin and Gulf areas of Australia and along the Victoria River. The Aborigines use the bark to relieve abdominal pain and to heal cuts and sores. The essential oil is produced by distillation. It is blue in colour with a subtle woody fragrance. It appears to have an anti-inflammatory action and is therefore useful in skincare preparations.

Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) -Wild

Frankincense is a small tree native to North Africa. It has been used as incense for burning at altars and in temples for centuries. It appears to help induce feelings of calm and deepened breathing which are aids to prayer and meditation. Frankincense was a very expensive and prised substance which may explain its use as an offering to the Christ child. As well as its religious use Frankincense was also used by the ancient Egyptians as a perfume, in cosmetics, for face rejuvenating products, in medicine and in embalming.
The odour of Frankincense is warm, rich and sweetly balsamic. The essential oil is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent and healing. It is also considered a tonic, helping to restore some tone to facial skin and improving slack, mature and wrinkled skin. Honey has been used for centuries for its healing properties and it combines well with essential oils, especially for problematic skin conditions. Hydrolats are obtained by steam distillation of plant material (e.g. chamomile, lavender) and can be thought of as true partial extracts of the plant material from which they are derived. Some plants, however, are not commercially distilled for essential oils but still produce useful hydrolats when distilled (e.g. cornflower, oak, plantain). Jasmine (Jasminum officinali, J. grandiflorum) Natural

Jasmine is native to China, Northern India and Western Asia and is cultivated in the Mediterranean region. Jasmine is a costly oil to produce due to the small amount of oil obtained from very large amounts of flowers which need to be picked at night when the odour is at its most powerful. Jasmine is a wonderful absolute to use in skin care preparations. Its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and healing therapeutic actions make it especially suitable for oily, dry and sensitive skin types. Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) - Organic

Jojoba, which is a liquid wax, is native to Mexico where the Pueblo tribe used oil from the crushed seeds on their skin and hair to overcome the drying effects of the hot desert sun. Jojoba contains myristic acid which is an anti-inflammatory agent. This carrier oil is beneficial for all skin types, especially dry, sensitive skin, chapped skin and conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. The molecular structure of Jojoba is similar to sebum which makes it useful for oily skin and acne. Jojoba is also believed to balance the acid mantle of the skin and therefore it is helpful for both dry and oily skins.

Lavender has a long established herbal tradition and was widely used centuries ago for bathing and washing linen. The plant derives its name from the Latin 'lavare' to wash. Lavender is probably the most versatile essential oil and has a wide range of therapeutic properties. In addition to its skin healing properties lavender is calming, soothing and balancing.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) - Organic

Lemongrass is native to India where it has a long medical tradition for treating infectious illness and fevers. This scented grass grows to about 3-5 feet in height and can be described as having a fresh, grassy, citrus aroma. Lime blossom (Tilia Cordata) - Organic Macerated Oil

Also known as the Linden tree, this is a tall, graceful tree with heart-shaped leaves grows up to about 30 metres. It is a macerated carrier oil which is obtained by steeping and agitating the flowers in good quality vegetable oil (usually organic sunflower oil). Lime blossom oil is used as an emollient which is also beneficial for wrinkled skin and skin problems such as itchy, dry skin.

Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) - Natural

The lotus plant has traditionally been at the centre of India's many religions and is considered a sacred flower which is a symbol of enlightenment. The plants emerge from muddy ponds in the remote countryside. The blossoms, which grow on long stems, slowly unfold their petals in the morning sunshine, releasing an intoxicating aroma into the air. Originally a perfume of pink and white lotus was created mainly for Indian royalty but production ceased following their decline. Cheaper, synthetic fragrances were then developed. However, a pink lotus absolute was developed in India in 1998. It has a rich and complex bouquet with a distinct honey, woody undertone. A plant milk has now also been developed. It has soothing and toning properties and is anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, vaso protective and reconstructive. It is therefore useful for mature skin.

The Macadamia nut tree is native to Australia. This carrier oil is unusual as it contains a high proportion of palmitoleic acid units which are found in human sebum, especially in the young. Myrrh (Commiphora molmol) - Wild

Myrrh is a small, tough tree which grows in North East Africa and areas along the Red Sea. The name comes from the Arabic 'murr' meaning bitter. Myrrh was used by the ancient civilisations as incense and in medicine it was particularly valued as a healing ointment for wounds. Myrrh essential oil has a warm, sweet, spicy, balsamic odour. Its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, healing properties make it suitable for chapped and cracked skin, eczema, wounds and mature skin.

Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii) - Organic

Palmarosa is a scented grass and is a member of the same botanical family as lemongrass. It is native to India and like lemongrass, has a tradition for treating infectious diseases and fevers. Palmarosa has a sweet, floral, geranium-like aroma and is probably best known for its skin care properties. The essential oil moisturises dull skin types and its antiseptic and healing properties make it useful for oily and dry skins. Palmarosa appears to stimulate cellular regeneration and tones crepey skin as well as helping to smooth out wrinkles.

Patchouli is a bush herb which is native to Indonesia and the Philippines. In traditional oriental medicine it was used to treat snake bites and poisonous insect stings. It is understood to have been used to help prevent the spread of diseases. Due to its wide ranging therapeutic properties, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent, bactericidal and healing, patchouli essential oil has many uses in skin care products especially oily skin and acne, dry, skin including eczema and mature skin. Plant Milks - Natural

Plant milks are natural, active raw materials which are very close to nature in their formulation. Plant milks contain plant proteins, lipids and sugars which form into a soft and fluid texture resembling milk. Proteins provide a protective film for the skin and act as a buffer to other substances such as chemicals. They are superb moisturisers and emulsifiers and retain water by reducing evaporation.
Phosopholipids (lipids) are also active in the skin and form part of the cell membrane. They supply some of the fatty acids which help maintain the good condition of the top layers of the skin surface. Polysaccharides (sugars) are able to form gels which help to maintain skin humidity. They are also moisturisers and, together with the proteins, provide the film which aids overall skin and cell performance. In summary, plant milks have reconstructing and moisturising properties which contribute to a softer and more emollient skin with improved tone and firmness. Petitgrain (Citrus aurantium) - Organic

Petitgrain essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and young twigs of the bitter orange tree. Originally, centuries ago, it was extracted from the tiny unripe green oranges, hence the name, petit grains. The best petitgrain comes from the Mediterranean region. The fragrance is fresh, floral, light, slightly citrus and woody. Petitgrain is a gentle antiseptic and is an effective ingredient for oily skin.

The key component of this ingredient is Tepescohuite which comes from the bark of the Mimosa tree. Tepescohuite contains bioflavanoids which are free radical scavengers. Rose Rose Absolute - Natural Rose Otto - Organic

Rosa centifolia is grown in the Grasse area of France in the heart of the French perfume industry. It is also grown in North Africa and is known as Rose Maroc. Rose damascena is believed to be native to the orient and is now cultivated in Bulgaria, Turkey and France. It is a smaller shrub than Rosa centifolia with pink, very fragrant flowers with 36 petals. It requires a specific climate and soil conditions. The essential oil or rose otto is produced by water or steam distillation from the fresh petals. Rose absolute is produced by solvent extraction from the fresh petals. Traditionally, Rose is associated with Venus, the goddess of love and beauty and was probably the first ever essential oil produced by distillation by the Persians in the 10th century. It is a fantastic oil for skin care and can be used for all skin types. It is especially beneficial for dry, sensitive and mature skin. The astringent action on the capillaries make it useful for redness or thread veins caused by enlarged capillaries.

Rosehip oil (Rosa canina R. rubiginosa) - Organic

Rosa Canina is known as the dog rose. Canina originates from the Latin meaning dog-like. The bush grows wild in Chile and Peru and the oil is produced by cold pressing the fruits. Rosehips contain about 20 times the Vitamin C that the equivalent amount of oranges would and, traditionally, rosehip syrup has been given to children to supplement their intake. Rosehip carrier oil is a useful ingredient to use where there are problems in skin regeneration, scars wounds, burns and eczema. Due to its natural Vitamin A content (retinolacid) it is also good for skin infections such as acne. It is also high in Essentially Fatty Acids (Omega 6 and Omega 3) and is therefore helpful for skin with large pores.

Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora) - Wild

Rosewood is native to the Amazon regions of Brazil and Peru. The felling of wild trees may have contributed to the destruction of the rainforest but, since the 1930s, cultivated plantations have been established, solely for commercial use. The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from wood chippings and its subtle odour is both woody and floral. Rosewood has a useful range of properties for skin care. It is antiseptic and bactericidal and is therefore helpful for oily skin. It is also a non-irritant and appears to be a cellular regenerator making it useful for both sensitive skin and mature skin.

Sandalwood (Santalum album) - Wild

Sandalwood grows in India and is a traditional Ayurvedic medicine for various urinary tract infections. It was also traditionally used as a perfume and incense and is often combined with rose to make the famous scent attar. Sandalwood essential oil can be helpful for many different skin types including dry and dehydrated and mature skins. Because it is slightly astringent and a powerful antiseptic it is beneficial for oily skins as well. Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) - Organic

Tea Tree is native to Australia, mainly New South Wales. The name derives from an Aboriginal herbal tea which was prepared from leaves from the tree. As well as the knowledge gained from the Aborigines and their long standing traditions using tea tree, scientific research has established that tea tree is active against all three types of infection, bacteria, fungi and viruses. Also, when the body is threatened by these organisms, tea tree appears to increase the body's ability to respond by stimulating the immune system. Because of these therapeutic properties, tea tree essential oil is an excellent ingredient in skin care products, especially oily skin including acne, rashes, spots, fungal conditions, insect bites, dandruff etc.

Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia V. fragrans) - Natural

Vanilla is native to Central America and Mexico where it grows in a semi-wild state. It was originally discovered by the Spaniards who used it to flavour chocolate. Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol) - Natural

Vitamin E is a general name for a group of related compounds called tochopherols, alpha tochopherol being the most common and most potent form of Vitamin E, synthetic Vitamin E being less effective. Vitamin E is considered an anti-oxidant which protects the connective tissue from damage by free radicals and aids skin healing. It is also believed that Vitamin E may delay the ageing process. It is Soil Association approved naturally sourced Vitamin E which is chemically extracted. It cannot, therefore, be certified as organic by the Soil Association but can be "approved" to be used in certified organic products.

Witch Hazel Hydrolat (Hamamelis virgiana) - Organic

This hydrolat is made from the leaves and twigs of this shrub type tree, collected in summer/autumn. Witch hazel is considered to be an effective astringent for inflammation of the skin and also has a calming effect to eruptions on the face. A study in 1993 concluded that witch hazel, although less effective than hydrocortisone, still produced good comparable results and without the serious side effects. It is an excellent skin freshener and toner and is useful for cracked and blistered skin due to its healing properties.

Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) - Organic

Ylang Ylang meaning "flower of flowers" is a tropical tree which is native to the Philippines and Indonesia. It produces tender, fragrant flowers of pink, mauve or yellow, with the yellow flowers producing the finest essential oil. The aroma is intensely sweet, heady and floral. Ylang Ylang is considered suitable for general skin care but its ability to balance and control the production of sebum from the sweat glands makes it ideal for oily skin and conditions such as acne.
